What does 'Energy Efficient' mean?

The term Energy Efficient simply means that an appliance or system uses a reduced total amount of energy to function.

Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving

Sometimes energy efficiency and energy saving is used interchangeably but they are fundamentally different.

• Energy Efficiency is the percentage of total energy input to an appliance or system that is consumed and not wasted.
• Energy Saving or Conservation is the reduction of the amount of energy used in the home or environment. It involves energy efficiency which is linked to products and appliances but is not the only way of saving energy. Energy Saving or Conservation also involves behavioural changes such as turning appliances off and not leaving them on standby or turning off the lights when one leaves the room.

You can save money through energy efficiency

Globally, energy efficiency could result in savings of hundreds of billions of pounds for organisations and individuals.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) claims that every $1 invested in energy efficiency generates more than $4 in savings. Energy prices are rising therefore in the future the savings from energy efficiency will rise. Higher carbon trading prices in future could also make energy efficiency more financially desirable for polluting industries, such as fossil fuel power generation and steel manufacturing.
